A Look at Firth's History
Firth was planned to have a courthouse square even before 1860. However, it was a very remote place back then. People had to travel far to get supplies, so not many non-Native people lived there for a long time.
How Firth Started
Firth began to be settled in the early 1870s. This happened as the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad was being built towards Lincoln. The village's post office opened in 1872. It was named after Frank Firth, who was a superintendent for the Atchison & Nebraska Railroad. Firth officially became a village in 1879.
Growth and Changes Over Time
Once the railroad was finished, Firth became a busy place for business. It was an important stop on the Atchison & Nebraska line. The village would ship large amounts of grain and livestock every day.
In 1916, a new brick school building was constructed. It replaced an older two-story schoolhouse. Later, in 1964, Firth's school joined with others to form the Norris School District 160. The old brick school building was taken down in 1971. In the 1970s, a place called Lakeview Rest Home was built in Firth. This was possible because of fundraising and land donated by Henry and Bertha TeKolste.
Famous People from Firth
- Orah Dee Clark was born in Firth. She became the first superintendent of schools in Alaska.
