Fish Springs is a special place in Inyo County, California. It is known for its natural springs, which are places where water flows up from underground. This area is located in the beautiful Owens Valley.
Where is Fish Springs?
Fish Springs is found in the eastern part of California. It is about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) south of a town called Big Pine. The area sits at an elevation of 3,937 feet (1,200 meters) above sea level.
A Look Back: Names and History
Fish Springs has had a few different names over time. It was once known as Tinemaha and also Tinnemaha. The name Tinemaha comes from a legendary Piute person who lived in this region long ago.
This area also played a role in connecting people through mail. A post office operated in Fish Springs for a short time in 1866. It then reopened and served the community from 1868 to 1876. Another post office, named Tinnemaha, was open from 1895 to 1910.
Water for a Big City
Close to Fish Springs, you'll find the Tinemaha Reservoir. A reservoir is like a large, artificial lake used to store water. This reservoir is an important part of the Los Angeles Aqueduct system. The aqueduct is a huge channel that carries water from the Owens Valley all the way to Los Angeles, helping to supply water to the city.
