Fladda is a small, uninhabited island located off the west coast of Scotland. It is part of a group of islands known as the Slate Islands. These islands are found within the area of Argyll and Bute.

The name Fladda comes from an old language called Old Norse. In Old Norse, "Fladda" means 'flat island'. This name perfectly describes the island's low and level shape. Fladda sits in the Sound of Luing, which is a narrow stretch of water between the larger islands of Luing and Belnahua.

Exploring Fladda Island

Fladda is a tiny islet, meaning it's a very small island. It's not a place where people live, so it remains wild and natural. The island's flat shape makes it stand out among the other islands in the area.

The Fladda Lighthouse

One of the most important features of Fladda is its lighthouse. The lighthouse helps ships navigate safely through the waters. It is still active today, guiding boats around the Slate Islands.

Building the Lighthouse

The Fladda lighthouse was built a long time ago, in 1860. It was designed by two famous engineers, David A. Stevenson and Thomas Stevenson. They were known for building many lighthouses in Scotland.

Lighthouse Design and Features

The lighthouse is a tall, round tower made of stone. It stands about 13 meters (43 feet) high. At the top, there's a balcony and a lantern room. The tower is painted white, while the lantern is black. It also has some ochre (a yellowish-orange color) trim.

The light from Fladda lighthouse flashes two white lights every 9 seconds. This unique pattern helps sailors know it's the Fladda light. Even though it's a smaller lighthouse, it plays a big role in maritime safety.

Wildlife at the Lighthouse

Interestingly, the old house where the lighthouse keeper used to live is now home to a large group of terns. Terns are seabirds that look a bit like gulls. They often nest in colonies, and Fladda provides a safe place for them.
