Flagstaff Hill is a suburb located in the City of Onkaparinga, South Australia. It gets its name from a special hill in the area. On this hill, Colonel William Light put up a flagstaff. This flagstaff was then used as a trig point, which is a fixed point used for surveying land. Flagstaff Hill is a very green suburb, full of trees and plants. It was built around the beautiful Sturt Gorge Recreation Park and has many parks and reserves throughout the area.

A Look at Flagstaff Hill's Past

How Flagstaff Hill Got Its Name

In 1838 and 1839, Colonel William Light's survey teams were busy mapping the land south of Adelaide. They left many markers across the landscape. One important marker was a trig point, or flagstaff. This was placed at a specific spot on the map. By 1842, the area around this trig point became known as "The Flagstaff."

Growing into a Suburb

In the late 1800s, the Flagstaff area was mostly used for farming and grazing animals. But by the 1960s, some of this land was chosen for new houses and streets. This process is called suburban development.

In 1960, a company called Hooker Rex Estates started buying land in the area. Over the next ten years, they bought almost 200 hectares. They planned to divide this land into smaller blocks for homes. The first blocks were near a golf course. Planners also made sure there was space for an oval and other fun activities.

The first 130 blocks of land were put up for sale in April 1967. They sold very quickly! By 1984, all the land that had been developed was sold. After 1985, the suburb grew even more. A part of Minda Home's Craigburn Farm was also divided into new housing areas. This new development was special because it kept many large trees and waterways. The new houses were built to fit the natural shape of the land.

In 2016, the population of Flagstaff Hill was 9,950 people.
