The Flamingo Revolution is a large social movement of peaceful marches and public demonstrations in the European country of Albania. It began in early 2026 when local citizens and students started speaking up to protect natural areas along the coast. The movement received its popular name from the flamingo, a pink water bird that lives in Albania's coastal wetlands. Many young people from Generation Z took part, making it one of the notable Gen Z protests in Europe.

Why Did the Flamingo Protests Start in Albania?
Protecting Wildlife and Coastal Lands
In early 2026, building plans were announced for new luxury hotels on Sazan Island and near the village of Zvërnec. American investors including Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump supported the resort project.
The building site sits near the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape, a natural wetland home to hundreds of rare animal species. Wildlife groups like BirdLife and the World Wildlife Fund warned that building large hotels could harm local animals. These creatures include monk seals, sea turtles, and large flocks of greater flamingos. People began marching to keep the beaches wild and safe for nature.
Calls for Better Government Rules
Citizens also grew concerned about how political decisions were made in the capital city of Tirana. Many people wanted clearer laws, fair rules for land ownership, and an end to government corruption. They asked Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government to listen more closely to public opinions. They also wanted limits on how long a prime minister could stay in office.
How Did the Protests Spread Across the World?
Large Gatherings and Flamingo Symbols
Protesters carried toy flamingos, pink cutouts, and modified versions of the flag of Albania. Some demonstrators also waved the anime pirate flag from One Piece as a symbol of youth teamwork.
Daily marches took place through Skanderbeg Square and down Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard. On 20 June 2026, more than 250,000 people gathered peacefully from Skanderbeg Square to Mother Teresa Square. Large crowds also gathered in other Albanian cities like Durrës, Vlorë, and Shkodër.
Support from Around the Globe
Albanians living in other countries, known as the Albanian diaspora, organized sister events. Rallies took place in cities such as London, Berlin, Vienna, Toronto, and New York City. Famous music stars like Dua Lipa and global politicians like Bernie Sanders expressed support for protecting Albania's natural landscape.
