Florida Afuera is a neighborhood, also known as a barrio, located in the area of Barceloneta, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 16,061 people lived there. It's an important part of the Barceloneta municipality, which is like a county or district.

History of Florida Afuera

How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.

Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave up control of Puerto Rico to the United States. This change happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the United States. This means it belongs to the U.S. but is not a state.

Counting the People: Early Census Data

Soon after Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory, the government started counting its population. In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count, or census, for all of Puerto Rico.

This census showed that Florida Afuera barrio had a population of 3,579 people at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Florida Afuera has changed quite a bit, as shown in the table below.
