History of Florin
Florin has a rich history, especially related to farming and its diverse communities.
Early 1900s: Farming Life
In the early 1900s, Florin was mainly a farming area. Farmers grew a lot of strawberries. Many Japanese immigrants came to Florin and became the main farmers. They were known for making the land very productive. Colonel John P. Irish, a leader in California, praised how Japanese farmers turned "barren land" into "profitable fields."
However, not everyone welcomed the Japanese immigrants. Some newspapers, like the Sacramento Bee, published articles that were not friendly. They worried about the growing Japanese population. This was during a time when there were agreements between the US and Japan about immigration, like the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907.
World War II and Its Impact
Things changed drastically for Japanese immigrants and Japanese Americans in Florin during World War II. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the US government became very suspicious. About 2,500 people in Florin were of Japanese descent. They made up most of the town's population.
The government issued Executive Order 9066. This order forced Japanese and Japanese Americans to leave their homes. They were sent to special camps called internment camps. Mary Tsukamoto, a Florin resident, remembered how quickly they had to leave. Signs were put up telling families where to report. They were given family numbers and sent away by train.
This event changed Florin forever. Japanese and Japanese American residents had to sell their homes and farms very quickly. Often, they sold them for much less than they were worth. When they were released from the camps, some returned to Florin. But many had to move to other places. Florin was no longer the Japanese American community it once was.
