History of Flourtown

Flourtown started way back in 1743. It got its name because there was a special mill nearby called a "flouring mill." This mill was used to grind wheat into flour.

In the 1940s, a guide about Pennsylvania mentioned that farmers used to come to Flourtown. They would buy supplies and have their wheat ground into flour at the mills along the Wissahickon Creek. Many of the houses in Flourtown are very old, some even from the time when America was still a group of colonies. Back then, Flourtown mostly had a few antique shops for business.
