Flowerdale is a small rural community located in north-west Tasmania, Australia. It is part of the Waratah-Wynyard area. Two important rivers meet here: the Inglis River and its biggest branch, the Flowerdale River. In 2011, a count of people, called a census, showed that about 324 people lived in Flowerdale and the nearby Table Cape area.
A Look Back in Time
Early Days and the Post Office
Flowerdale had its own Post Office, which opened a long time ago on March 1, 1891. It served the community for many years before closing in 1981.
The Preolenna Railway Line
There was once a railway line called the Preolenna line. It started near Flowerdale and went all the way to a place called Maweena. This train line opened in 1917 but didn't last very long. It closed just 14 years later, in 1931. The company that ran the trains, the Tasmanian Government Railways, said that very few people or goods used the line.
