Floyd I. Clarke was an important leader at the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. He served as the acting director for a short time in 1993.

Early Life and Career

Floyd I. Clarke was born on January 7, 1942, in Phoenix, Arizona. He went to George Washington University in Washington, D.C.. There, he earned a college degree and later a law degree.

In 1964, he started working for the FBI as a special agent. Special agents are like detectives who investigate crimes for the U.S. government. He worked in different FBI offices, including Boston, Philadelphia, and Kansas City. He also worked at the main FBI office, called FBI Headquarters. Mr. Clarke moved up through many important jobs at the FBI. He started as a special agent and eventually became the acting director.

Leading the FBI

In 1993, Bill Clinton was the president of the United States. He decided to choose a new director for the FBI. The director at that time was William S. Sessions. President Clinton asked Mr. Sessions to leave his job.

On July 19, 1993, Mr. Sessions was dismissed. Floyd I. Clarke was then named the acting director of the FBI. This meant he was in charge for a short time. He served in this role until September 1, 1993. After that, Louis Freeh became the new official director of the FBI.

After the FBI

After his time as acting director, Floyd I. Clarke retired from the FBI. He then joined a private company called MacAndrews & Forbes. This company specializes in buying and selling other businesses. Mr. Clarke worked there as a vice president. His job was to make sure the company followed all the rules.
