Foley was officially planned and laid out in 1879. People have different ideas about how the town got its name. Some say it was named after Addison Foley, who owned the land where the town was built. Others believe it was named after Miss Addie Foley, another person who settled there early on. A post office has been open in Foley since 1880, helping connect the community.
