History of Fordongianus
In ancient times, Fordongianus was known as Forum Trajani. This name was given to honor the Roman emperor Trajan. Many people believe Emperor Trajan was responsible for building the amazing Roman ruins you can still see there today.
Ancient Roman Buildings
The Roman remains in Fordongianus are quite impressive. They include parts of an old bridge and large, beautiful thermae, which were public bathhouses. These bathhouses were very grand and showed how important the town was in Roman times.
Location and Importance
Fordongianus is mentioned in old travel guides from the Roman Empire, like the Antonine Itinerary. These guides show that it was an important stop on the road that crossed the island of Sardinia. The town is located on the left bank of the Tirsi River, which was known as the Thyrsus River in ancient times. This river location was likely important for trade and travel.
