Children Hlér, Logi, Kári

Fornjót is a powerful jötunn (giant) in Norse mythology. He is known as the father of three important forces of nature: Hlér (the sea), Logi (fire), and Kári (wind). Fornjót is also mentioned as a legendary king who ruled over lands like Finnland and Kvenland in old stories.

What Does the Name Fornjót Mean?

The name Fornjótr comes from Old Norse. Its exact meaning is not fully clear, but scholars have a few ideas. It is often thought to mean 'ancient giant' or 'primordial giant'. Another idea is 'original owner'. Some also suggest it could mean 'one who enjoys sacrifices' or 'ancient screamer'.

Fornjót in Old Stories

Fornjót appears in several ancient Norse texts. These include poems called Eddas and longer stories known as Sagas.

Fornjót in the Eddas

In old poems, Fornjót is sometimes linked to the elements. For example, a poet named Þjóðólfr of Hvinir used the phrase "son of Fornjót" to mean 'fire'. Another poet, Svein, used "Fornjót's sons ill-shapen" to describe the 'wind'. This shows how Fornjót was seen as the father of these natural forces. He is also listed among other giants in a collection of names called the þulur.

Fornjót in the Sagas

In sagas like the Orkneyinga saga and How Norway Was Settled, Fornjót is described as a king. He ruled over areas that included what is now called Finnland (the land of the Sámi) and Kvenland. These stories confirm that Fornjót had three sons: Logi (fire), Kári (wind), and Hlér (sea). Hlér is also known as Ægir.

Fornjót and the Kings of Norway

Fornjótr is sometimes shown as an ancestor of the kings of Norway in various historical texts. This means he was considered a very early figure in the family line of these rulers. The family tree below shows how Fornjót is connected to some of these legendary kings.
