History of Fort Klamath
When Was Fort Klamath Built?
The United States Army established Fort Klamath in 1863. It became a very important post for the Army. The fort helped keep peace during a time of conflict with the Klamath, Modoc, and Northern Paiute tribes.
Life at the Fort
Fort Klamath was a busy place. It had more than 50 buildings. These included homes for soldiers and officers, and even a sawmill. In 1873, during the Modoc War, some Modoc leaders were buried at the fort. Their graves are still there today.
Closing of the Fort
A post office opened at Fort Klamath in 1879. By the mid-1880s, the local settlers felt safer. They no longer needed the Army's protection as much. So, in 1889, the Army decided to close the fort. After a very snowy winter, the soldiers left on June 23, 1890. They moved to another base called Vancouver Barracks.

Visiting the Fort Today
Today, part of the old fort area is a park and museum. Klamath County, Oregon, takes care of this 8-acre (32,000 m2) site. The Fort Klamath Museum is in a building that looks like the fort's original guardhouse. It stands exactly where the old guardhouse used to be.
National Recognition
The Fort Klamath site was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. This means it is a place with special historical value that is protected.
