Fort Shaw is a small community in Cascade County, Montana, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for counting people. In 2020, about 256 people lived there.
This place is named after a former United States military base. It's also part of the larger Great Falls area.
The fort was first called Camp Reynolds. Later, it was renamed Fort Shaw to honor Colonel Robert G. Shaw. He was a brave officer from Boston who led one of the first units of African American soldiers, called the United States Colored Troops, during the American Civil War. The U.S. government built this fort in 1867 along the historic Mullan Road, and a community grew around it.
