History of the Fox Theater
Opening and Early Years
The Fox Theater Pomona first opened its doors on April 24, 1931. For 50 years, it showed brand-new movies. The building has a classic "Hollywood Style" Art Deco design. It features a tall, impressive tower. The famous architects Balch & Stanberry designed it.
Hollywood movie studios often used the theater for special "sneak previews." They would show new movies before they were officially released. This helped them see how audiences liked the films.
Decline and Closure
In the early 1970s, big single-screen theaters like the Fox started to become less popular. Many people preferred newer "multiplex" theaters, which had many smaller screens. The Fox Theater kept going for a few years by showing Spanish-language movies. However, it finally closed in 1977.
Saving the Theater
Citizens in Pomona really wanted to save the theater. Because of their efforts, the city of Pomona bought the building. In 2002, a group called the Pomona Fox Corporation was started. They wanted to save and reuse the theater. But they could not find enough money for the big restoration job.
In February 2007, a family named Tessier bought the building. This family also helped create the Pomona Arts Colony. They spent $10 million to restore the theater. It took two years to make the building beautiful again.
Reopening and Modern Use
The Fox Theater Pomona reopened on May 21, 2009. It can now hold about 2,000 people. It has become a top spot for arts, music, and film events. It was even ranked as one of the best venues in Los Angeles!
Concerts and Performers
The Fox Theater Pomona has hosted many popular bands and artists. Some of the groups that have played there include Blur (band), Crystal Castles, Green Day, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, Morrissey, Oliver Tree, Paramore, Slowdive, Twin Tribes, Tyler The Creator, and Twenty One Pilots.
