Early Life and First Steps in Music
Oliver Tree Nickell was born in Santa Cruz, California. From a young age, he was interested in music. His first time performing was with a ska band called Irony, where he sang and played guitar.
In 2010, he started his solo career under the name "Tree." He even performed as an opening act for famous artists like Skrillex. At age 20, he signed with R&S Records and released an EP called Demons. An EP, or extended play, is like a mini-album with just a few songs. His cover of the Radiohead song "Karma Police" got a thumbs-up from their lead singer, Thom Yorke. After this, Tree took a break from music to study music technology at the California Institute of the Arts.
Career Breakthrough
Return to Music
In 2016, Tree returned to the music scene. He was featured on the song "Forget It" by Getter. Soon after, his song "When I'm Down" with the artist Whethan went viral, which means it spread quickly online. This led to him signing a contract with a major record label, Atlantic Records.
Tree is also known for making funny comedy videos. He often writes, directs, and stars in them himself.
In 2018, Tree released his first EP with Atlantic Records, called Alien Boy. He also released a music video for "All That x Alien Boy" that he wrote and directed. It took nine months to make! For the video, he learned how to do freestyle monster truck jumps and did all his own stunts.
He performed at big music festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella, where his unique fashion style got a lot of attention.
First Album: Ugly Is Beautiful
Between 2018 and 2019, Tree released several popular singles, including "Hurt" and "Miracle Man." The music video for "Hurt" was filmed in Ukraine.
He announced his first full album, Ugly Is Beautiful, would come out in March 2020. However, he decided to delay the release because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He later delayed it again, saying he felt it was important to give attention to the social issues happening at the time. The album was finally released on July 17, 2020.
A fun fact about Tree is that in May 2020, he set a Guinness World Record for riding the world's largest kick scooter.
Global Hits and More Albums
Even though Tree sometimes joked about retiring, he continued to make music. In 2021, he released a deluxe version of his first album. A song from it, "Life Goes On", became a huge hit worldwide.
In 2022, he released his second album, Cowboy Tears, which had a country music theme. Later that year, his song "Miss You", a remix with DJ Robin Schulz, also became a global success.
In 2023, Tree released his third album, Alone in a Crowd. He also went on a world tour, performing in Australia, Europe, and the United States.
