Oliver Tree Nickell (June 29, 1993 – June 14, 2026) was an American singer, songwriter, and rapper. He was also a record producer, filmmaker, and comedian. Oliver Tree was known for his unique music style and funny personality.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, Oliver Tree became famous for songs like "Life Goes On" and "Miss You." He released several albums, including Ugly Is Beautiful and Cowboy Tears. Oliver Tree passed away on June 14, 2026, in a helicopter accident in Brazil.

Oliver Tree's Early Life

Oliver Tree Nickell was born on June 29, 1993. His hometown was Santa Cruz, California. His parents were Jesse Louis Nickell III and Christine Marie.

He studied business at San Francisco State University for two years. Later, he went to the California Institute of the Arts. There, he studied music technology.

His Music Journey

Starting Out and a Break

Oliver Tree began his music career in 2010. He used the name "Tree" at first. He performed at big shows, even opening for artists like Skrillex. In 2013, he released his first album, Splitting Branches. He also played guitar in a ska band called Irony.

At age 20, Oliver Tree signed with R&S Records in London. He released his first extended play (EP), Demons, in August 2013. Even Radiohead's lead singer, Thom Yorke, liked his cover of their song "Karma Police." After this, Oliver Tree took a break from music. He went back to school to study music technology.

Returning to Music

In March 2016, Oliver Tree started making music again. He was featured on a song called "Forget It" by Getter. Later that year, he appeared on TV for the first time. He performed on Last Call with Carson Daly.

After his song "When I'm Down" became very popular, Oliver Tree signed with Atlantic Records. He graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a degree in fine arts. In February 2018, he released his first major EP, Alien Boy. He also released a music video for "All That x Alien Boy." Oliver Tree wrote and directed this video himself. He even spent five months learning to do monster truck jumps for it!

Oliver Tree performed at major music festivals. These included Lollapalooza and Coachella. He also toured with other artists. He often created funny comedy videos and sketches.

Releasing Albums and Popular Songs

Between 2018 and 2019, Oliver Tree released several songs. These songs were part of his first studio album, Ugly Is Beautiful. He filmed the music video for his song "Hurt" in Ukraine. He also went on the Ugly Is Beautiful Tour. In June 2019, he released "Miracle Man." His second EP, Do You Feel Me?, came out in August 2019.

In December 2019, he released "Cash Machine." He also announced that Ugly Is Beautiful would be released in March 2020. However, due to important world events, the album's release was delayed. It was finally released on July 17, 2020. In May 2020, Oliver Tree set a Guinness World Record. He rode the world's largest kick scooter!

New Albums and Collaborations

Oliver Tree released new music even though he sometimes joked about retiring. In 2021, he released a deluxe version of his first album. It was called Ugly Is Beautiful: Shorter, Thicker & Uglier. The song "Life Goes On" from this album became very popular.

In 2022, he released his second studio album, Cowboy Tears. He also released singles like "I Hate You" and "Placeholder." He went on a tour to support the album. He also had a very popular song called "Miss You" with Robin Schulz.

In 2023, Oliver Tree released new songs. These included "Here We Go Again" with DJ David Guetta. He also released "Bounce," which was the first song from his third album. This album was called Alone in a Crowd. He announced a big world tour for this album. Alone in a Crowd was released on September 29, 2023.

In October 2025, he released "Superhero." This was the first song from his fourth album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly. This album was released on April 24, 2026. Oliver Tree announced that he had left Atlantic Records. He released this album independently under his own label, Alien Boy Records. He then started "The World’s First World Tour" in May 2026. He planned to visit many countries around the world. He performed in Mexico City and São Paulo before his passing.

Oliver Tree started dating singer-songwriter Melanie Martinez in 2019. They separated in June 2020.

His Passing

In June 2026, Oliver Tree was in Brazil for his world tour. He performed in São Paulo on June 6. Oliver Tree passed away on June 14, 2026. He was in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Five other people also died in the accident. These included Argentine YouTuber Gaspi and film director Lucas A. Vignale. The cause of the accident is still being investigated.
