François J. Castaing (born 18 March 1945 – died 26 July 2023) was a French car expert. He worked for big car companies like Renault, American Motors (AMC), and Chrysler. He studied engineering in Paris, France. Castaing became known for his smart ideas in designing cars and how they were made.

Early Career in Racing Cars
Castaing started his career in 1968 working on racing car engines for a company called Gordini. These engines were for famous races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Later, Gordini joined with Renault. Castaing became the Technical Director for Renault Sport, which was Renault's racing division. He helped develop powerful racing engines and managed racing programs.
In 1980, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, with his family. He joined American Motors Corporation (AMC), a company that Renault partly owned.
Innovations at AMC and Chrysler
At AMC, Castaing was in charge of designing and developing new cars. He played a key role in creating the smaller Jeep Cherokee. This SUV became very popular and made a lot of money for AMC. It also helped start the modern SUV trend we see today.
Castaing also came up with a new way to design cars. Instead of different departments working separately, he created "platform teams." Each team focused on one type of car, working on it from the first idea to the final production. This helped AMC develop cars much faster.
This new way of working is now called product lifecycle management (PLM). It helps companies manage a product's journey from start to finish. AMC used this system to develop the Jeep Grand Cherokee. They used computer-aided design (CAD) software and a central database for all drawings. This made engineers more efficient and helped solve problems faster.
In 1987, Chrysler bought AMC. Many people at Chrysler were impressed by AMC's success, especially with the Jeep Cherokee. François Castaing became a very important leader at Chrysler. He was quickly named the vice president for Vehicle Engineering. Chrysler needed his ideas to make new and exciting cars.
Before buying AMC, Chrysler was struggling to create new car models. Castaing helped Chrysler fight against its competitors. He also helped design many different types of cars for various customers.
Castaing used the "platform team" idea at Chrysler. He reorganized Chrysler's 6,000 engineers into teams, each working on a specific car platform. This team approach helped speed up car development. Bob Lutz, a top executive at Chrysler, said Castaing was a great engineer who loved challenges and made impossible things happen.
One of the first projects using Castaing's platform approach was the Chrysler LH-cars. These cars, like the Eagle Vision, Dodge Intrepid, and Chrysler Concorde, were designed and produced in a record 39 months. Other Chrysler cars often took more than 50 months. These new cars were built at AMC's modern factory in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Castaing is credited with developing many new cars and trucks that helped Chrysler become very successful in the 1990s. He also worked on designs for minivans, making sure they used space very well. His success even attracted other big car companies like Daimler-Benz (which later merged with Chrysler) and showed how innovative Chrysler had become.
In 1993, Castaing helped create the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR). This group brings together Chrysler, General Motors, and Ford to work on new car technologies. He also played a key role in developing the Dodge Viper's powerful V10 engine.
In 1998, after Chrysler merged with Daimler-Benz, Castaing became a technical adviser. He retired from the company in 2000.
Castaing helped start the SUV trend that became very popular in North America in the 1990s and later in Europe.
Life After Chrysler
After leaving DaimlerChrysler, Castaing joined the boards of directors for several companies. These included battery company Exide and Valeo, an auto parts supplier. He also served on the board of the Federation of American Scientists.
Castaing was passionate about science education. In 1998, he became chairman of the New Detroit Science Center. He led a big fundraising effort to expand and renovate the center, which reopened in 2001. He wanted to inspire future generations in science and engineering.
From 1994, Castaing also served on the board for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST). This organization runs robotics competitions for high school students, created by inventor Dean Kamen.
Death
François Castaing passed away on 26 July 2023, at the age of 78.
Achievements and Awards
A French car magazine, Le Journal de l'Automobile, named Castaing "Man of the Year." They recognized his success in the United States, especially for developing the Renault-AMC structure and launching cars like the Renault Alliance. He was also called the "father of the Jeep Cherokee (XJ)" and a key person in saving Chrysler.
In 1995, Castaing was elected to the United States National Academy of Engineering. This honor recognized his work in creating reliable, high-performance cars and his innovative ways of organizing car production. He was also chosen as a fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for his big impact on car technology.
On 12 October 2010, François Castaing was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan. This is a very high honor in the car industry.
