History of Francesinha Poveira
The Francesinha poveira is a special fast food version of the original francesinha dish. It first appeared in 1962. This happened at a place called café Guarda-Sol in Passeio Alegre beach square in Póvoa de Varzim.
Guarda-Sol is a very old place. It opened in June 1922. It is the oldest café-bar in Póvoa. It was also the first beach bar in all of Portugal!
The idea for Francesinha poveira came from the original francesinha from Porto. Fun fact: the Porto version was actually created by a person from Póvoa, Daniel Silva. The Póvoa version was created because the manager, Alberto Moreira, wanted to make a new and special product.
He went to Lisbon to find the right person for the job. He hired António Carriço, who was from Fundão. António had a great idea. He asked the baker who supplied Guarda-Sol to create a new type of bread. This bread needed to be like a small baguette, but soft and very tasty. This is how the "francesinha bread" (pão de francesinha) was invented!
Francesinha Sauce
What makes the francesinha so special is its unique sauce, also called gravy. This sauce is poured all over the sandwich. It gives the dish its rich and delicious flavor.
