Francisco de Paula de Cea Bermúdez y Buzo (born October 28, 1779, in Málaga, Spain – died July 6, 1850, in Paris, France) was an important Spanish politician and diplomat. He served as the Prime Minister of Spain two times. A prime minister is like the head of the government in many countries.

Francisco Cea Bermúdez: A Spanish Leader

Francisco Cea Bermúdez was a very successful businessman before he became involved in politics. His skills in business helped him in his later career as a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations.

Early Career and Diplomatic Missions

In 1810, the Cádiz Cortes (a kind of Spanish parliament) sent him to Russia. His mission was to create an alliance with Russia against Napoleon, who was a powerful French emperor. This shows how important he was considered, even early in his career.

After the war, Francisco Cea Bermúdez continued his work as a diplomat. He served as an Ambassador in different countries.

First Time as Prime Minister

In 1824, Francisco Cea Bermúdez became the Prime Minister of Spain for the first time. However, during this period, another politician named Francisco Calomarde had a lot of influence. Calomarde was seen as the real leader of the government at that time.

His first time as Prime Minister ended in October 1825. After this, he went back to being an Ambassador.

  • From 1825 to 1827, he was the Ambassador in Dresden, Germany.
  • From 1827 to 1832, he returned to serve as Ambassador in London.

Return to Power and Key Decisions

On October 1, 1832, Francisco Cea Bermúdez was called back to become Prime Minister again. This was a very challenging time for Spain. Ferdinand VII of Spain, the king, was dying.

The Pragmatic Sanction and Carlist War

A major event during his second term was the coming into effect of the Pragmatic Sanction of 1830. This was a law that changed who could inherit the Spanish throne. It allowed a female heir, Isabella II of Spain, to become queen. This decision led to a big conflict known as the First Carlist War. This war was fought between those who supported Isabella and those who supported her uncle, Don Carlos.

Spain's New Divisions

Francisco Cea Bermúdez was also responsible for the 1833 territorial division of Spain. This was a major change that reorganized Spain into new provinces. This new way of dividing the country is still largely used today.

Later Life and Legacy

Francisco Cea Bermúdez was removed from his position as Prime Minister in January 1834. After this, he moved to Paris, France, where he lived until his death in 1850 at the age of 70. He is remembered for his diplomatic work and for leading Spain during a very important time of change.
