Francisco José Urrutia Holguín (born May 28, 1910 – died October 19, 1981) was an important Colombian-Ecuadorian lawyer and diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. He held many key roles, including being Colombia's main representative at the United Nations. He also served as an ambassador to several countries.
Early Life and Education
Francisco José Urrutia Holguín was born in Quito, Ecuador, on May 28, 1910. He later studied at the National University of Colombia. There, he earned a PhD, which is a very high university degree.
On July 18, 1934, he married Genoveva Montoya Williamson in Bogotá. They had five children together: Francisco, María Lourdes, Jorge, Miguel, and Jaime. Francisco José Urrutia Holguín passed away in Bogotá, Colombia, on October 19, 1981, when he was 71 years old.
A Life in Diplomacy
Francisco José Urrutia Holguín had a long and successful career as a diplomat. His job was to represent Colombia and its interests in other countries.
- Ambassador to Argentina: From 1948 to 1950, he was Colombia's ambassador to Argentina.
- Ambassador to Venezuela: He then served as ambassador to Venezuela from 1952 to 1953.
- Representative to the United Nations: From 1953 to 1957, he was the 7th Permanent Representative of Colombia to the United Nations. This meant he spoke for Colombia at the United Nations, an international organization that works for peace.
- Ambassador to the United States: His last major role was as the 11th Colombia Ambassador to United States. He held this position from 1955 to 1957.
