Franco Citti (born April 23, 1935 – died January 14, 2016) was an Italian actor. He was well-known for working closely with the famous director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Franco Citti became famous for playing the main character in Pasolini's first film, Accattone. This role even earned him a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actor.

After Accattone, he acted in six more of Pasolini's films. He also appeared in about 60 other movies and TV shows. His brother, Sergio Citti, was also a director and screenwriter.

Franco Citti's Life and Career

Franco Citti was born in Fiumicino, Italy, in 1935. He grew up with his older brother, Sergio. Before becoming an actor, Franco worked as a painter and a day laborer.

When he was 26, director Pier Paolo Pasolini discovered him. Pasolini liked Franco's unique Roman look. He cast Franco in the main role of his very first film, Accattone, in 1961. Franco Citti acted alongside other people who were not professional actors. He became the breakout star of the movie. His performance earned him a nomination for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Actor. He also received a nomination for a Nastro d'Argento for Best Actor.

Working with Pier Paolo Pasolini

Pasolini chose Franco Citti for six more of his films. Franco became one of Pasolini's most important creative partners.

  • In Mamma Roma (1962), he played Carmine, acting with Anna Magnani.
  • He played the main character in Oedipus Rex (1967).
  • He was a cannibal in Pigsty (1969).
  • He played Ser Ciappelletto in The Decameron (1971).
  • He was Satan in The Canterbury Tales (1972).
  • He played the Demon in Arabian Nights (1974).

Franco Citti also appeared in a 2002 documentary about Pasolini. In this film, he talked about how they worked together.

Other Film Roles

Franco Citti also worked with other famous directors. These included Sergio Corbucci, Carlo Lizzani, Valerio Zurlini, and Bernardo Bertolucci. He acted in several movies directed by his brother Sergio. They even directed a film together in 1998 called Cartoni animati.

Many people outside Italy know Franco Citti best from his role as Calò. Calò was a Sicilian bodyguard in the famous movies The Godfather and The Godfather: Part III. He had a memorable line in the film: "In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns."

Franco Citti passed away in Rome on January 14, 2016. He was 80 years old and had been ill for a long time.
