Francis Mitchell Cayou (born March 7, 1878 – died May 7, 1948) was an amazing athlete and coach. He played and coached American football, basketball, and baseball. He was a member of the Omaha tribe and was also known as Standing Elk. He even served as a chief of his tribe.
Cayou was the head football coach at Wabash College from 1904 to 1907. Later, he coached at Washington University in St. Louis from 1908 to 1912. His total record as a college football coach was 38 wins, 30 losses, and 4 ties. He also coached basketball at Washington University, winning 25 games and losing 23.
Before becoming a coach, Cayou was a talented player. He went to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and then Dickinson College. He played football as a quarterback for the Carlisle Indians. He also played for Dickinson College and the Illinois Fighting Illini. At Illinois, he was known for his incredible speed. He once ran 95 yards for a kickoff return against Purdue! He also set a track record at the University of Illinois in the 220-yard dash. In 1902, he became the captain of the Illinois track team.

Coaching Football and More
Francis Cayou started his coaching career at Wabash College. He was the 16th head football coach there. From 1904 to 1907, his teams had a record of 20 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie.
A Big Upset Victory
In 1905, Cayou led Wabash to a huge upset win. They beat the famous Notre Dame team 5–0 in South Bend, Indiana. This was a very rare loss for Notre Dame at home. It was one of only a few times they lost at home between 1899 and 1928!
Athletic Director Roles
After his time coaching football, Cayou took on other important roles in sports. In 1918, he became the athletic director for the Illinois Athletic Club. He worked there until 1921. From 1921 to 1923, he was also the athletic director at the Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois.
