Frank Cyril Tiarks (born 9 July 1874 – died 7 April 1952) was an important English banker. He was also known as F. C. Tiarks and received an award called the OBE for his services.

Early Life and Family

Frank Cyril Tiarks was the son of Henry Frederick Tiarks, who was also a banker. His father was a partner in a well-known banking company called J. Henry Schröder & Co. in London. Frank's mother was Agnes Morris. His grandfather, Johann Gerhard Tiarks, was a chaplain to the Duchess of Kent.

Career and Service

Frank Tiarks started his education on HMS Britannia from 1887 to 1889. After that, he served in the Royal Navy as a midshipman from 1889 to 1894.

He left the Navy after his older brother passed away, so he could join his father in the banking business. Frank Tiarks held many important positions during his career. He was a director at the Bank of England from 1912 to 1945. He was also a partner in J. Henry Schröder & Co., the same company his father worked for. From 1917 to 1948, he was a partner in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, which later became BP. In 1927, he was named High Sheriff of Kent, which is an old and respected role in England. He was also honored with the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his contributions.

During World War I, Frank Tiarks served as a Lieutenant-Commander. He worked under Sir William Reginald Hall, who was the Director of Naval Intelligence, in a secret department called Room 40 at the Admiralty. This group was very important for gathering intelligence during the war.

Frank Tiarks had German family roots, just like his wife. He was also involved in groups that aimed to improve relations between Britain and Germany.

Marriage and Family Life

Frank Tiarks married Emmie Marie Franziska Brödermann in Hamburg, Germany, on 18 November 1899. Emmie was born on 15 February 1875 and passed away on 27 July 1943. Her father, Eduard Matthias Brödermann, was a merchant.

His granddaughter, Henrietta Tiarks, became the Dowager Duchess of Bedford. She was married to the fourteenth Duke of Bedford. Frank Tiarks is also a distant cousin of Mark Phillips.
