How Schroders Started and Grew
Schroders began its journey in 1804. That's when Johann Heinrich Schröder joined his brother's business in London. His brother, Johann Friedrich, had started his own company in 1800. Later, in 1818, J. Henry Schröder & Co. was officially set up in London.
Key Moments in Schroders' History
A big step for the company was in 1923. They opened J. Henry Schroder Banking Corporation in New York. This was a commercial bank, which helps businesses with their money.
In 1959, parts of the company were offered to the public. This meant anyone could buy shares in J. Henry Schroder & Co. Ltd on the London Stock Exchange. In 1962, they bought another important company called Helbert, Wagg & Co.
In 1986, Schroders sold its banking part in New York. They also bought half of Wertheim & Co., an investment bank in New York. This company did similar work to Schroders' London business. Schroders played a big role in selling off government-owned companies in the UK during the 1980s.
The company grew a lot under Winfried Bischoff. He became the boss in 1984. Back then, Schroders was worth about £30 million. By 2000, the company sold its investment banking part to Citigroup for a huge £1.3 billion.
