History of Schroders
The story of Schroders began in 1804. That's when Johann Heinrich Schröder joined his brother's business, J.F. Schröder & Co., in London. His brother, Johann Friedrich, had started the company in 1800. A few years later, in 1818, J. Henry Schröder & Co. was officially set up in London.
Over the years, Schroders grew and changed. In 1923, they opened a commercial bank in New York called J. Henry Schroder Banking Corporation, or 'Schrobanco'.
A big step for the company was in 1959 when its shares were offered to the public on the London Stock Exchange. This meant anyone could buy a part of the company. In 1962, they bought another important company called Helbert, Wagg & Co.
In 1986, Schroders sold its banking business in New York. They also bought half of Wertheim & Co., an investment bank in New York. Schroders became very important in helping the UK government sell off state-owned companies in the 1980s. The company grew a lot under Winfried Bischoff, who became its CEO in 1984. When he started, Schroders was worth about £30 million. By 2000, the company sold its investment banking part to Citigroup for a huge £1.3 billion!
In 2013, Schroders bought the money management part of Cazenove for £424 million. This helped them manage even more money for clients.
More recently, in September 2020, Schroders bought a company called Sandaire Investment Office in London. In June 2021, they brought all their special private investment teams together under a new name, Schroders Capital.
In 2023, Schroders made some changes to its leadership. Chris Durack and Karine Szenberg became co-heads of their client groups. This was done to help the company grow more in the Asia-Pacific region.
In September 2024, Richard Oldfield, who was the finance chief, was named the new CEO. He took over from Peter Harrison in November 2024. Also in November 2024, Schroders decided to make its executive committee smaller. This means fewer people will be making the top decisions for the company. Ed Houghton joined Schroders as the head of strategy and investor engagement.
How Schroders Works Today
Schroders helps many different types of clients manage their money. These clients include big companies, insurance companies, local governments, charities, and even individuals who have a lot of money. They also help regular people who want to invest.

At the end of 2021, Schroders was managing about £615.2 billion worth of assets for its clients. This shows how much trust people put in them to handle their money.
