He was an amateur cricketer, meaning he played for the love of the game, not as a paid professional. This was common in cricket during his time.
A Talented All-Rounder
In cricket, an "all-rounder" is a player who is very good at both batting and bowling. Frank Foster was one of the best. He could score lots of runs and take many wickets.
Batting Skills
Frank was a right-handed batsman. He played in 159 first-class matches. In these games, he scored a total of 6,548 runs.
His average score was 26.61 runs per innings. He hit seven centuries, which means he scored 100 runs or more in a single innings seven times. His highest score was an amazing 305 runs, where he was not out.
Bowling Prowess
As a bowler, Frank Foster used his left arm to deliver "fast-medium" balls. This means his bowling was quick and tricky for batsmen to hit.
He took 717 wickets in his first-class career. His best bowling performance in one innings was taking 9 wickets for only 118 runs.
Frank took "five wickets in an innings" 53 times. This is a great achievement for a bowler. He also took "ten wickets in a match" 8 times, showing his consistent skill.
Fielding
Besides batting and bowling, Frank was also a good fielder. He completed 121 catches during his career. This shows he was a valuable player in all parts of the game.
His Cricket Career
Frank Foster played for Warwickshire County Cricket Club from 1908 to 1914. He also represented England in Test cricket in 1911 and 1912.
Test cricket is the highest level of the sport. He played 11 Test matches for England. In these matches, he scored 330 runs and took 45 wickets.
