History of Frankford Village

The original village of Frankford was founded in 1854 along Deer Creek. It was started by Lewis Patchin, Bartlett Leathers, and Byron Woodworth. The town was officially mapped out in 1856 and was even named the county seat for a short time.

Frankford Village was once a busy frontier community. It had three stores, a school, a cemetery, and several workshops, including those for blacksmiths and wagons. There was also a mill for grinding grain, a factory that made chairs and coffins, and a shoe shop. The Patchin Hotel served as the local post office and was where county court meetings were held. County records were kept upstairs in the hotel.

However, Frankford Village did not remain the county seat. Its population slowly decreased after it lost this important role. The biggest reason for its decline was the Southern Minnesota Railroad, which was built in 1870. The railroad ran four miles south of the village. Instead of moving the village closer to the railroad, like some other towns did, the people of Frankford simply moved to other areas of the township or county.

Today, all that remains of the old village is a cemetery. This cemetery is still used and can be found in the northeast part of section 24 of Frankford Township.
