František Šťastný (born November 12, 1927 – died April 8, 2000) was a famous Czech motorcycle road racer. He was known for his exciting style and his success in Grand Prix events.

František started his sports journey as a bicycle racer. In 1948, he even took part in the famous Peace Race. He then switched to motorcycles, competing in his first race in 1947 on a DKW bike.

Early Racing Days

In 1952, František raced in the Czechoslovak Grand Prix. He used a Norton motorcycle that was already used. He finished in a good 7th place. The next year, in 1953, he joined the official Jawa factory racing team. This was a big step for his career.

National Champion

František Šťastný became a national hero in Czechoslovakia. He won the Czechoslovak motorcycle championship five times:

  • 1956: 500cc class
  • 1958: 350cc class
  • 1959: 350cc class
  • 1960: 250cc class
  • 1965: 350cc class

He also won the Czechoslovak Grand Prix eight times. These wins showed he was one of the best riders in his home country.

Grand Prix World Stage

František Šťastný began competing in the Grand Prix world championship in 1957. He raced against the best riders from all over the world.

His most successful year was 1961 in the 350cc class. He raced in five events that season. He won two races: the German Grand Prix and the Swedish Grand Prix. He also finished in third place twice. Overall, he earned 26 points and finished second in the championship. Only Gary Hocking scored more points that year.

František was also a regular competitor in the tough Isle of Man TT races. His best results there were in 1962 and 1963 in the 350cc class.

Over his Grand Prix career, František Šťastný:

  • Started 51 Grand Prix races.
  • Won 4 Grand Prix races.
  • Stood on the podium (finished in the top three) 21 times.
  • Scored a total of 183 points.
  • Achieved one fastest lap during a race.

After he stopped racing professionally, František Šťastný became a sportscaster. He worked for Czechoslovak Television, sharing his knowledge and love for sports with many fans.
