Françoise Arnoul (born Françoise Annette Marie Mathilde Gautsch) was a famous French actress. She was born on June 3, 1931, and passed away on July 20, 2021. Françoise became very popular in the 1950s for her movie roles.

Early Life of Françoise Arnoul

Françoise Arnoul was born in Constantine, French Algeria. Her mother, Janine Henry, was a stage actress. Her father, Charles Gautsch, was an army general. Françoise had two brothers. In 1945, her family moved to Paris, France. Her father stayed in Morocco for his military work.

Françoise Arnoul's Acting Career

Françoise studied acting in Paris. A director named Willy Rozier noticed her talent. He gave her a big role in his film L'Épave (1949). This was her first major movie part.

Françoise Arnoul starred in many well-known films. Some of these include Forbidden Fruit (1952) by Henri Verneuil. She also appeared in French Cancan (1954) directed by Jean Renoir. Other important films were People of No Importance (1956) with Jean Gabin. She also acted in The Cat (1958) and Way of Youth (1959). Her last major film was Testament of Orpheus (1960) by Jean Cocteau.

Her first American movie was Companions of the Night (1954). Later in her life, Françoise started working in television. She appeared in different TV movies and mini-series. She also took on smaller, but important, character roles. In 1995, she wrote her life story in a book called Animal doué de bonheur.

Personal Life and Legacy

In 1956, Françoise Arnoul married Georges Cravenne. He was a publicity agent. They had met two years before their marriage. However, they separated in 1960. Later, in 1964, she became partners with French director Bernard Paul. Their relationship lasted until he passed away in 1980.

Françoise Arnoul died on July 20, 2021, in Paris. She was 90 years old.
