The World's Largest Turkey
Frazee is famous for something special: "Big Tom," the World's Largest Turkey statue! The city has a long history with the turkey farming industry. To celebrate this, local turkey farmers and community members decided to build a giant turkey statue in 1984.
The first "Big Tom" was finished in 1986. It was 22 feet (6.7 meters) tall! It was made with a metal frame covered in cement, fiberglass, and other materials. This huge statue earned Frazee the nickname "Home of the world's largest turkey."
However, the first Big Tom needed a lot of repairs because of how it was built. People also thought it didn't look quite like a real turkey. So, the community decided to get a new one. In 1998, while the old Big Tom was being taken down, it accidentally caught fire from a cutting torch!
A new and improved "Big Tom" arrived in Frazee on September 19, 1998. It came in three large pieces on a special truck. It took eight hours to put together. The new Big Tom is over 20 feet (6.1 meters) tall and 17 feet (5.2 meters) wide. It weighs more than 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg) and has 1,000 pounds (454 kg) of steel inside to make it strong. It's covered with 3,000 to 4,000 separate fiberglass feathers, which took a company over 2,000 hours to create!
