Fred Jackson was born on June 9, 1950. He is an American college football coach and a former player. Since 2022, he has worked as an offensive analyst for the University of Michigan.
He coached at Michigan for many years, from 1992 to 2014. In 2014, he was the coach who had been at Michigan the longest. He worked for several head coaches, including Gary Moeller, Lloyd Carr, Rich Rodriguez, and Brady Hoke.

Fred Jackson's Coaching Roles
Fred Jackson held many important coaching jobs at Michigan. He coached the running backs, who are players who carry the ball. He was also an offensive coordinator from 1995 to 1996. This role means he was in charge of the team's offensive plays.
From 1997 to 2002, he was an assistant head coach. Then, from 2003 to 2007, he became an associate head coach. These roles mean he helped the head coach lead the team.
Awards and Recognition
Fred Jackson was recognized for his great coaching. In 2000, he was a finalist for the Broyles Award. This award goes to the best college football assistant coach in the country. He also won the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year Award in 2001.
Staying with Michigan
Fred Jackson was a very important coach for Michigan. When head coach Lloyd Carr retired in 2007, Jackson was the only coach kept by the new head coach, Rich Rodriguez.
Later, when Rodriguez was fired after the 2010 season, Jackson was again the only coach kept by the next head coach, Brady Hoke. This shows how valuable he was to the team. Hoke and Jackson had worked together before under Carr and Moeller. They were part of the team that won the national championship in 1997.
Before Michigan
Before joining the Michigan Wolverines, Fred Jackson coached at several other universities. He started his college coaching career at the University of Toledo from 1979 to 1981.
He then coached at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 1982 to 1986. After that, he worked at the United States Naval Academy in 1987. He also coached at the University of South Carolina in 1988.
From 1989 to 1990, he coached at Purdue University. His last stop before Michigan was at Vanderbilt University in 1991.
Fred Jackson's Family
Fred Jackson lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His family is also involved in football. His son, Jeremy Jackson, played as a wide receiver for the Michigan Wolverines football team. He played from 2010 to 2013.
His younger son, Josh Jackson, also played college football. He was the starting quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins.
