Fred Thomas Saberhagen (born May 18, 1930 – died June 29, 2007) was an American writer. He was famous for his exciting science fiction and fantasy stories. His most well-known works include the Berserker series. These books are about giant, evil robot spaceships.
He also wrote a series of vampire novels. In these stories, the famous Dracula is a main character. Another popular series was his Swords and Lost Swords novels. These were fantasy stories set in a world after a big disaster. Fred Saberhagen passed away in Albuquerque, New Mexico, due to cancer.
About Fred Saberhagen
Fred Saberhagen was born and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. When he was in his early twenties, he served in the U.S. Air Force. This was during the Korean War.
After his time in the Air Force, Fred worked as an electronics technician. He worked for the Motorola company from 1958 to 1962. He was about 30 years old at this time.
Starting His Writing Career
While working at Motorola, Fred Saberhagen started writing stories seriously. His very first story, "Volume PAA–PYX," was published in 1961. It appeared in Galaxy Magazine.
His first "Berserker" story, called "Fortress Ship," came out in 1963. Then, in 1964, his first full novel was published. It was titled The Golden People.
From 1967 to 1973, he worked as an editor. He helped with Chemistry articles for the Encyclopædia Britannica. He also wrote the article about science fiction for them. After that, he decided to become a full-time writer. In 1975, he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Family Life
Fred Saberhagen married Joan Spicci in 1968. She was also a writer. They had two sons and one daughter together. Fred Saberhagen died on June 29, 2007, in Albuquerque. He was 77 years old.
Fred Saberhagen's Books
Fred Saberhagen wrote many popular books. His most famous are the Berserker series. These stories are about a war between humans and giant, powerful robots. These robots are called Berserkers. They were built long ago to destroy all life in the galaxy.
He also wrote the Books of the Swords series. These are fantasy stories where powerful swords have magical abilities. The swords can grant wishes or cause great destruction. Many characters try to find and use these special swords.
