Frederick Archibald Vaughan Campbell, 3rd Earl Cawdor, PC, JP, DL (born February 13, 1847 – died February 8, 1911), was a British politician. He was known as Viscount Emlyn until 1898. He belonged to the Conservative Party. He served as the First Lord of the Admiralty for a short time in 1905. This role meant he was in charge of the British Navy.

Early Life and Education

Frederick Campbell was the oldest son of John Campbell, 2nd Earl Cawdor. His mother was Sarah Mary. He went to Eton, a famous school. Later, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a university in England.

He grew up on his family's land in south Wales. When he turned 21 in 1868, it was a big event in the town of Llandeilo. In 1874, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness county. This was an important local position.

Serving as a Member of Parliament

Frederick Campbell became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1874. He represented Carmarthenshire for the Conservative Party. He served in this role until 1885.

In 1885, his constituency was split into two parts. He decided to run for the new West Carmarthenshire seat. However, he lost this election to W.R.H. Powell. This loss ended his time as an MP for Carmarthenshire.

Later Political and Public Roles

In 1898, Frederick Campbell became the Earl Cawdor. He then served as the First Lord of the Admiralty. This was under the Prime Minister Arthur Balfour. He was in this important role from March to December 1905.

Lord Cawdor was also involved in local politics in Pembrokeshire. He was the Chairman of the Great Western Railway from 1895 to 1905. During his time, he made many improvements to the railway service. In 1904, he was elected to the Pembrokeshire County Council.

He was also an officer in the Royal Carmarthen Artillery. This was a Militia unit, like a local army reserve. He was a lieutenant-colonel in command. He was promoted to colonel and became an aide-de-camp to King Edward VII. This meant he was a personal assistant to the King.

Family Life

Lord Cawdor married Edith Georgiana Turnor in 1868. They had ten children together. He passed away in February 1911, at the age of 63. His oldest son, Hugh, took over his title as Earl. Lady Cawdor died later in 1926.
