Edward Marjoribanks, known as the 2nd Baron Tweedmouth (born July 8, 1849 – died September 15, 1909), was an important British politician. He was a member of the Liberal Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is like one part of the UK Parliament, from 1880 until 1894. After that, he became a Baron and joined the House of Lords, another part of Parliament. He held many important jobs in the government during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

About Edward Marjoribanks

Early Life and Education

Edward Marjoribanks was the son of Dudley Marjoribanks, who was the 1st Baron Tweedmouth. His mother was Isabella. Edward had a sister named Ishbel. His family had been in Scotland for a long time. He went to Christ Church, Oxford university. In 1870, he had to leave the university after a prank caused some damage to college sculptures.

A Career in Politics

Edward Marjoribanks started his political career in 1880. He was elected to Parliament for a place called Berwickshire. This seat had been held by other family members before him. He kept this job until 1894.

Important Roles

In 1886, he worked for Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. He became a member of the Privy Council that same year. This is a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

When the Liberal Party came back to power in 1892, he became the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury. This role is often called the chief whip, helping to organize the party in Parliament.

In 1894, he became the 2nd Baron Tweedmouth after his father passed away. This meant he moved from the House of Commons to the House of Lords. Soon after, a new Prime Minister, Lord Rosebery, gave him two big jobs: Lord Privy Seal and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Being Lord Privy Seal meant he was a senior member of the government. As Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, he managed lands and income for the King or Queen. He held these jobs until 1895.

After ten years, the Liberal Party won power again in 1905. The new Prime Minister, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, made Edward Marjoribanks the First Lord of the Admiralty. This meant he was in charge of the Royal Navy.

Challenges and Later Years

In 1908, he faced some criticism. He had been writing letters to the German Emperor, William II, about Britain's navy plans. This was discussed in Parliament. The government explained that the letters were friendly and private, and no action was taken against him.

Later that year, his health declined, and he resigned from his role. He was honored with the title Knight of the Thistle in 1908.

Edward Marjoribanks cared about workers' rights. He believed the Liberal Party should work with the Labour Party to help working people. He thought this alliance was important for the Liberal Party to win elections.

He passed away on September 15, 1909, at the age of 60.

Family Life

In 1873, Lord Tweedmouth married Lady Fanny Octavia Louise. She was the daughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough and was also the aunt of Sir Winston Churchill, who later became a famous Prime Minister. Lady Fanny passed away in 1904.

They had one son, Dudley, who became the 3rd Baron Tweedmouth after his father.

Lord Tweedmouth owned a large estate in Scotland called Guisachan in Glen Affric. He was known as the "Laird" (owner) of this land. People said he was a "generous laird" who did a lot for the people living on his estate. After his wife died, he sold the estate in 1908.

The Rocking Chair Ranche

From 1883 to 1896, Edward Marjoribanks was also an owner and investor in a large ranch in Texas, USA. It was called the Rocking Chair Ranche. He owned it with his father and his brother-in-law.
