History of Freedom, Indiana

Freedom was first planned and settled in 1834. At that time, it was a very important place for shipping goods. People used large, flat boats called flatboats to move things on the water. The community's name comes from Joseph Freeland, who was one of the first people to settle there. A post office has been open in Freedom since 1834.
