Freire is a town and commune located in the Araucanía Region of Chile. It is part of Cautín Province. In 2012, about 21,750 people lived there. The commune covers an area of about 935.2 square kilometers.
Freire is an important place because it sits where two main roads meet. These are Chile Highway 5 and Route CH-199. Route CH-199 connects Freire to popular towns like Villarrica and Pucón.

The National Statistics Institute (INE) counts people in Chile. Their 2017 census showed that Freire had 25,514 residents. About 10,979 people (38.9%) lived in urban areas, which are towns or cities. The remaining 20,531 people (92.1%) lived in rural areas, which are countryside areas.
