Fighting in the Mountains
In the Alps mountains, not much changed during 1794. The French army tried to invade a region called Piedmont (which is now part of Italy). However, this attack did not succeed.
Battles on the Spanish Border
Along the border with Spain, the French army, led by General Dugommier, made a big move. They pushed out from their defensive spots near Bayonne and Perpignan. Their goal was to drive the Spanish forces out of Roussillon, a region in southern France.
The French then invaded Catalonia, which is a part of Spain. Sadly, General Dugommier was killed in November during a major battle called the Battle of the Black Mountain.
War in the North
On the northern front, known as the Flanders Campaign, both the Austrians and the French prepared for battle in Belgium. The Austrians moved towards cities like Mons and Maubeuge. The French got ready to attack from several directions.
Two French armies were in Flanders. They were led by Generals Pichegru and Moreau. Another French army, led by Jourdan, attacked from the German border.
The French faced tough fights in June, including battles at Kortrijk, Tourcoing, and Fleurus. Despite these challenges, the French armies managed to push back their enemies. They drove the Austrians, British, and Dutch forces beyond the Rhine River. After these victories, the French moved into Belgium, the Rhineland, and southern Holland.
Quiet on the Rhine
In July, General Michaud's Army of the Rhine tried two attacks along the middle Rhine River. However, this part of the war front stayed mostly quiet for the rest of the year.
At sea, the French Atlantic Fleet had an important job. They successfully protected a group of ships, called a convoy, that was bringing important food supplies (cereals) from the United States. The British fleet tried to stop them, but they failed.
In the Caribbean Sea, the British fleet landed on the island of Martinique in February.
French Victories
By the end of 1794, the French armies had won important battles. They had achieved victories on all the different fronts where they were fighting.
