History of Friant's Name

Friant has gone through several name changes since it was first settled.

  • Converse Ferry (1852-1863): The area was first called Converse Ferry. This name came from Charles Converse, who started a ferry service across the San Joaquin River in 1852.
  • Jones Ferry (1863-1881): Later, it was renamed Jones Ferry. This was in honor of J.R. Jones, who was a local merchant.
  • Hamptonville (1881-1891): When the post office opened in 1881, the place was named Hamptonville. This new name was for William R. Hampton, who was the first postmaster.
  • Pollasky (1891-1907): In 1891, the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived. They named the area Pollasky, after Marcus Pollasky, who was an official with the railroad.
  • Friant (1907-present): Finally, in the 1920s, the place was renamed Friant. This current name honors Thomas Friant, who was an executive in a lumber company.
