Friant is a small community located in Fresno County, California, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for statistics, but it's not an officially incorporated city or town.
Friant has had many names over time, including Converse Ferry, Jones Ferry, Hamptonville, and Pollasky. In 2020, about 446 people lived there. Friant is about 11.5 miles (18.5 km) north of Clovis. It sits at an elevation of 344 feet (105 meters) above sea level.

Geography of Friant
Friant is located right next to the San Joaquin River. It's also at the base of the Friant Dam and Millerton Lake.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Friant covers a total area of about 1.3 square miles (3.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 96.2%, is land. The remaining 3.8% is water.
Climate in Friant

History of Friant's Name
Friant has gone through several name changes since it was first settled.
- Converse Ferry (1852-1863): The area was first called Converse Ferry. This name came from Charles Converse, who started a ferry service across the San Joaquin River in 1852.
- Jones Ferry (1863-1881): Later, it was renamed Jones Ferry. This was in honor of J.R. Jones, who was a local merchant.
- Hamptonville (1881-1891): When the post office opened in 1881, the place was named Hamptonville. This new name was for William R. Hampton, who was the first postmaster.
- Pollasky (1891-1907): In 1891, the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived. They named the area Pollasky, after Marcus Pollasky, who was an official with the railroad.
- Friant (1907-present): Finally, in the 1920s, the place was renamed Friant. This current name honors Thomas Friant, who was an executive in a lumber company.

In 2010, Friant had a population of 509 people. Most of the residents, about 85.1%, were White. There were also people of African American, Native American, and Asian backgrounds. About 12.4% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
The median age in Friant was 51.8 years old. This means that half the people were older than 51.8, and half were younger. About 16.3% of the population was under 18 years old. About 27.5% of the population was 65 years or older.

In 2000, Friant had a total population of 778 people. The racial makeup was similar to 2010, with about 89.21% White residents. About 10.02% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
