Fritessaus or frietsaus (which means "fries sauce") is a popular sauce from the Netherlands. People in the Netherlands love to eat it with their French fries. It looks a lot like mayonnaise, but it's usually sweeter and has less fat.
To be called mayonnaise in the Netherlands, a sauce must have at least 70% fat and 5% egg yolk. Fritessaus has much less fat, usually 25% or less. This makes it a lighter choice for your fries!
How is Fritessaus Made?
Most people buy fritessaus ready-made from the store. However, you can also make it at home! The process is quite similar to making mayonnaise.
When making fritessaus, people often thin it down with water or other liquids. Some recipes also include lime juice for a fresh taste. You might also find ingredients like chives and capers added to give it extra flavor.
