Fritz Strobl is best known for winning the gold medal in the downhill race at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, USA. This big win happened on the challenging Grizzly course at Snowbasin.

In his last season as a professional skier in 2007, he won a silver medal. This was in the super-G event at the World Championships held in Åre, Sweden.

Strobl competed in the World Cup for 15 seasons. During his career, he won 9 races. Seven of these wins were in the downhill event, and two were in the super-G. He also finished in the top three (on the podium) 31 times and in the top ten 110 times.

He was very strong in downhill skiing. He finished second overall in the downhill standings in 2002 and 2006. He also placed third in 1997 and 2001. His best overall ranking in the World Cup was fifth in 2005.

Fritz Strobl is one of only a few skiers to win the famous Hahnenkamm downhill race in Kitzbühel twice. He won this tough race in 1997 and again in 2000. He still holds the record for the fastest time on the full Streif course. He finished it in just 1 minute and 51.58 seconds in 1997. This means he was skiing at an amazing average speed of about 66.4 miles per hour (106.9 km/h)!

Strobl decided to retire from international competitions at the age of 34. His last season was the 2007 season. In his very last race on March 15, 2007, he made it memorable. He skied down the Lenzerheide super-G course dressed up as the famous composer Mozart!
