Froid is a small town located in Roosevelt County, Montana, in the United States. In 2020, about 195 people lived there. The town's name, Froid, comes from a French word meaning "cold."

Discovering Froid's Past
The area where Froid now stands was first settled by James and Alice Baker. They built a store that sold dry goods, offered horse boarding, and even had a place for meat. Some families living in Froid today, like the Johnsons, are related to the Bakers.
Froid officially became a town in 1910. In 2007, the town made news when Montana's Governor, Brian Schweitzer, spoke at the high school graduation. The graduating class had only one student, Roxie Britton! This unique event was shared widely in the news.
Where is Froid Located?
Froid is situated close to the border of North Dakota. It is also north of another Montana town called Culbertson. You can find Froid along Highway 16.
The United States Census Bureau reports that the town covers about 0.28 square miles (0.72 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the town limits.

According to the census from 2010, Froid had 185 residents living in 92 households. Almost half of these households (46.7%) were married couples living together.
The average age of people in Froid was about 50.9 years old. About 23.2% of the residents were under 18 years old. Also, 27.6% of the population was 65 years or older. Slightly more than half of the residents were female (54.6%), and 45.4% were male.
Education in Froid
Students in Froid attend Froid Public Schools, which serves children from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade. The sports teams at Froid High School are known as the Red Hawks.
Froid also has a branch of the Roosevelt County Library. The main library is located in Wolf Point. Interestingly, the famous book The Paris Library, written by Montana author Janet Skeslien Charles, is partly set in Froid.
