Fujiidera (藤井寺市, Fujiidera-shi) is a city in Osaka Prefecture, Japan. As of January 31, 2022, about 63,446 people lived there. The city covers an area of 8.89 square kilometers. Fujiidera is known for its history and temples.

Geography of Fujiidera

Fujiidera is located in the southeastern part of the Osaka Plain. It sits where the Yamato and Ishikawa rivers meet. The city area is mostly flat. High walls, called levees, protect the lower areas from floods. Parts of the river banks are used for fun activities and recreation.

History of Fujiidera

The area where Fujiidera city is today was once part of an old Japanese province called Kawachi. It was also the capital of that province. People from the Korean kingdom of Baekje settled here long ago. They were led by the Kudara no Konikishi clan. This clan were descendants of the Baekje royal family.

Centuries later, a famous battle happened here. It was called the Battle of Dōmyōji in 1615. This battle was part of the Siege of Osaka.

How Fujiidera Became a City

  • On April 1, 1889, several villages were created. These included Nagano, Koyama, Domyoji, and Sawada.
  • Dōmyōji and Sawada villages joined together on March 31, 1890.
  • In 1896, Nagano village was renamed Fujiidera village.
  • Fujiidera village grew by adding Koyama in 1915.
  • Fujiidera became a town on October 1, 1928.
  • Dōmyōji also became a town on January 1, 1951.
  • On April 20, 1959, the towns of Fujiidera and Dōmyōji merged. They formed a new town called Fujiidera-Dōmyōji.
  • This town was renamed Misasagi on January 1, 1960.
  • Finally, Misasagi became a city on November 1, 1966.

Fujiidera Stadium

Fujiidera Stadium was a baseball stadium in Fujiidera. It was built in 1928. The Kintetsu Buffaloes baseball team used it until 1996. They then moved to a new stadium called the Osaka Dome. Fujiidera Stadium closed in 2005. The land where it stood was then used for new buildings.
