Fullers is a small community called a hamlet in New York, United States. It's part of the town of Guilderland in Albany County. This hamlet is located right along U.S. Route 20, which is also known as Western Turnpike.

Discovering Fullers: A Look at Its Past

Fullers got its start and its name from the important Fuller family.

The Fuller Family's Influence

Major John Fuller was a key person in the area. He was part of the New York State Militia and owned a home and a tavern here. Because of him, the local train station for the West Shore Railroad and the post office were named Fuller's Station.

His son, Aaron Fuller, also played a big role in the hamlet's growth. Aaron was the Town Supervisor for Guilderland, which means he was like the head of the town's local government. He was also a New York State Assemblyman, meaning he helped make laws for the state. Aaron Fuller was a Democrat and was the only one from his party to be elected town supervisor for over 100 years!

Transportation and Community Life

In 1799, a major road called the Great Western Turnpike was built. This road connected Albany to the western parts of the state. Later, in 1882, the West Shore Railroad built train tracks that crossed this turnpike. The tracks went from places like Ravena and Voorheesville to Schenectady.

The Fullers Station was built on Fullers Station Road, a bit southwest of the turnpike. The Fullers post office was also on this road, inside the Van Allen General Store. Fullers even had its own one-room schoolhouse, called Guilderland District Number 13. After finishing elementary school there, students had to pay to travel by train to Ravena for high school.

Changes Over Time

The post office in Fullers closed in 1918. Today, mail for Fullers comes from Altamont. The train station also closed in 1927. This happened when the Western Turnpike road was lowered. This change allowed the West Shore Railroad tracks to go over the road on a bridge, making travel smoother.
