Furcifer timoni is a special kind of chameleon, which is a type of lizard. It belongs to the family called Chamaeleonidae. This chameleon lives only in Madagascar, an island country off the coast of Africa. This means it is endemic to Madagascar.

What's in a Name?

The specific name, timoni, was chosen to honor Timon Robert Glaw. Timon was born in 2004. He is the son of Frank Glaw, a German scientist who studies reptiles and amphibians. Frank Glaw was the main author who described this new species.

Where Does the Timon Chameleon Live?

The Timon chameleon lives in a specific area of Madagascar. It is found in the Montagne d'Ambre National Park, which is located near the northern tip of the island. This park covers about 385 square kilometers (149 square miles). These chameleons live at heights between 750 and 900 meters (2,460 to 2,950 feet) above sea level.

Some photos suggest it might also live in the Marojejy National Park. However, scientists have not officially confirmed this yet. Its favorite natural habitat is the forest.

Is the Timon Chameleon in Danger?

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed Furcifer timoni as Near Threatened. This means it is not in immediate danger, but there are possible threats that could affect it. If these threats become serious, the chameleon's status could change.

For example, if its habitat shrinks, it could become Critically Endangered. The Timon chameleon lives in a small area, so it is more vulnerable. Threats include logging for charcoal and the collection of valuable rosewood trees. These activities can destroy the forest where the chameleons live.

What Does the Timon Chameleon Look Like?

Female Furcifer timoni chameleons are mostly green. Their underside is a yellow-orange color. Their bodies have blue spots, and the top of their head is red with blue spots.

Male chameleons of this species look a bit different. Their heads are green and have purplish spots.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Furcifer timoni is an oviparous species. This means that the females lay eggs. Scientists have found female chameleons carrying up to 14 eggs at a time.

How Was This Chameleon Discovered?

Furcifer timoni was first described as a new species in 2009. It was discovered by three German scientists who study reptiles and amphibians: Frank Glaw, Jörn Köhler, and Miguel Vences.
