After the 2000 Olympics, Aurélio moved to the Spanish club Valencia. He signed a six-year contract. In the 2001–02 season, he helped his team win their first La Liga championship in 31 years. The coach, Rafael Benítez, played a big role in this success.
The 2003–04 season was another great year for Valencia. They won both the La Liga championship and the 2003–04 UEFA Cup. They beat Marseille 2–0 in the final. Sadly, Fábio Aurélio missed most of this season because of a broken leg. He only played two games.
Playing for Liverpool
In July 2006, Fábio Aurélio joined the English Premier League club Liverpool. He moved on a free transfer, which means Liverpool didn't have to pay a transfer fee. He was the first Brazilian player to sign for Liverpool. He said that joining his former coach, Rafael Benítez, was a main reason for his decision.
Aurélio played his first game for Liverpool on 13 August in a win against Chelsea. He was an important player in his first season. He continued to face injuries during the 2010–11 season. He made a comeback in November 2010. He also played in Kenny Dalglish's first match back as Liverpool manager in January 2011. In May 2012, Liverpool announced that Aurélio's contract would end, and he would leave the club after six seasons.
