History of G-Unit Records
Early Years (2003–2005)
After 50 Cent joined Interscope Records in 2002, he was given the chance to start his own music company. This became G-Unit Records in 2003. The rap group G-Unit joined the label. This group included Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and Young Buck. Each member also signed as a solo artist.
The first album released by G-Unit Records was 50 Cent's album, Get Rich or Die Tryin'. It featured songs with Young Buck, Tony Yayo, and Lloyd Banks. The album was very popular. It quickly became number one on the Billboard 200 music chart. It has sold many copies and is certified nine times platinum. This means it sold over 9 million copies. Hit songs from the album included "If I Can't" and "21 Questions".
The success of 50 Cent helped other G-Unit artists release their music. The group G-Unit released their first album, Beg for Mercy, in November 2003. It sold over 377,000 copies in its first week. The album has sold more than 2.7 million copies in the U.S. It is certified double platinum.
Lloyd Banks released his first album, The Hunger for More, in June 2004. Other G-Unit artists like Tony Yayo, Young Buck, and 50 Cent were on the album. The song On Fire was a big hit. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart. It was also certified platinum in America.
In 2004, The Game and Spider Loc joined the label. Later, Mobb Deep and M.O.P. also signed with G-Unit Records.
G-Unit Records ended 2005 with the soundtrack for the movie Get Rich Or Die Tryin'. Many artists from the label were on this album. It reached number 2 on the Billboard 200. It was certified platinum.
Growth and Changes (2006–2009)
In 2006, G-Unit Records signed Young Hot Rod. They also signed Nyce and 40 Glocc. In 2007, Mazaradi Fox joined the label.
In 2008, there were rumors of disagreements between 50 Cent and Young Buck. 50 Cent announced that Young Buck was no longer part of the G-Unit group. However, Young Buck was still signed to the record label for a while.
In late 2009, 50 Cent's fourth album, Before I Self Destruct, was released. It included a song called "So Disrespectful." This song talked about past disagreements with other artists. In 2009, 50 Cent also worked with Beanie Sigel. This led to talk that Beanie Sigel might join G-Unit Records.
During an interview, 50 Cent confirmed that The Game, Young Buck, Spider Loc, and Young Hot Rod were still signed to the label at that time. However, M.O.P and Mobb Deep were no longer with the label. The label then signed R&B singer Governor and Beanie Sigel in November.
