George Ross Anderson Jr. (born January 29, 1929 – died December 1, 2020) was an American lawyer, politician, and judge. He served as a judge for the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. After finishing his studies, Anderson joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He then worked as a private lawyer starting in 1954. In 1955, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter chose him to become a federal judge. He became a senior judge in 2009 and retired in 2016.

Early Life and Education

George Ross Anderson Jr. was born in Anderson, South Carolina. His father worked in a textile mill. However, he wanted his son to have a different path. Young George took on many jobs, like delivering newspapers and roofing.

He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Commercial Science, in 1949 from Southeastern University. He also studied political science at George Washington University from 1949 to 1951. Later, he received his law degree, a Bachelor of Laws, from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1954.

Public Service and Law Career

Before becoming a judge, Anderson worked for United States Senator Olin D. Johnston as a helper. He did this from 1947 to 1951 and again from 1953 to 1954. He also served in the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1952. During the Korean War, he was a finance instructor and a historian for an air wing.

Anderson was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1955 to 1956. At the same time, he practiced law in Anderson, South Carolina, from 1954 until 1980. He helped design the water system for Anderson County. He also helped bring cable television to the area. Anderson was one of the twelve people who started the South Carolina Association for Justice. He was its president from 1971 to 1972.

Becoming a Federal Judge

On April 18, 1980, President Jimmy Carter nominated Anderson to be a judge. He was chosen for a seat on the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina. The United States Senate approved his nomination on May 21, 1980. He officially became a judge on May 23, 1980.

On his 80th birthday, January 29, 2009, he took on a "senior status." This means he worked a reduced schedule. He retired from his service on March 1, 2016.

Later Life and Legacy

In 2002, a federal courthouse was named in honor of Judge Anderson. This was a special recognition, as it's rare for a living judge to receive such an honor. In 2015, the student center at Anderson University was also named after him. This was one of his last public appearances.

He received the Order of the Palmetto, a high award from South Carolina. George Ross Anderson Jr. passed away on December 1, 2020, at a nursing home in South Carolina.
