Gail Boggs's Acting Journey
Starting on Stage
Gail Boggs always dreamed of becoming a big star on Broadway. Her parents were Willie, a tree surgeon, and Alice, a dietitian. Gail got her first professional acting job in 1971. She played Silvia in a touring show of Shakespeare's play The Two Gentlemen of Verona. This show traveled all the way to Australia!
After this, Gail signed with a big agency called William Morris Agency. She then acted in many plays. These included the rock opera Mother Earth and the famous Jesus Christ Superstar. She also performed in Candide.
Singing and Music
In the mid-1970s, Gail also became a singer. She met musician Todd Rundgren by chance in Manhattan. This led her to sing backup for other artists. She sang on albums for Felix Cavaliere and Hall & Oates. She also worked with Carly Simon on her albums Spy and Come Upstairs.
Gail was also part of a band called "The Striders." She sang and played percussion. Later, she was a vocalist in David Sancious's band "Tone."
The Gail Boggs Show
In 1984, Gail started her own show. It was a one-woman cabaret act called The Gail Boggs Show. It ran weekly for about a year and a half.
Gail also played a small but important role in music history. She was one of the first people to hear Madonna's song "Like a Virgin." Gail encouraged the famous producer Nile Rodgers to release it. He made it the first single from Madonna's upcoming album. Pictures of Gail Boggs can be found in the Martha Swope archive. This is a special collection at the New York Public Library.
