Galician-Portuguese is a group of languages. They are part of the Romance languages family. These languages first appeared in the northwest part of Iberia. This area includes parts of modern-day Portugal and northwestern Spain.
Over time, these languages spread south. Today, they are spoken across all of Portugal. They are also spoken in the northwestern parts of Spain. The two main languages in this group are Galician and Portuguese.
All Galician-Portuguese languages started as one single language. This original language began to be used around 870 A.D. Over many years, it slowly changed. By the year 1400, it had split into different languages. These new languages included Galician, Portuguese, Eonavian, and Fala.
Portuguese Language Spreads
The Portuguese language traveled far from Iberia. During the colonial era, Portuguese explorers went to Brazil. They brought their language with them. Because of this, Portuguese is now the main language spoken in Brazil.
