History of Gallatin
People first settled in the area around Gallatin in the late 1840s. However, a town didn't really start until 1902. This was when the Texas and New Orleans Railroad (T&NO) built its tracks through the area.
John W. Chandler and his sister, Sophronia, owned the land nearby. They asked a lawyer named C. H. Martin to plan out a town. Chandler named the new town Gallatin. He named it after his hometown, Gallatin, Tennessee. That town was named after a person called Albert Gallatin.
Gallatin quickly became a place where farmers could sell their crops. The area was known for growing a lot of tomatoes and other vegetables. In 1907, a new railroad line was built between Gallatin and Rusk. This made Gallatin even more important for shipping goods.
By 1914, about 350 people lived in Gallatin. The town had several churches, two general stores, a drugstore, a school, and a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds.
In 1916, a big fire destroyed almost all the businesses in Gallatin. But the town was quickly rebuilt. By the mid-1930s, Gallatin had 500 residents and five businesses.
After World War II, the town started to get smaller. The school joined with the Rusk schools in the 1950s. Many of the town's businesses also closed. By the early 1950s, the population dropped to 350. In 1990, only 171 people lived there, and there were only two stores.
Even with the decline, Gallatin officially became an incorporated city in the early 1980s. This means it became its own legal town with its own local government. In 1991, about 382 people lived there, and it had three businesses. In 2000, the population was 378, with four businesses.
